OBSTETRICS
From the first visit early in pregnancy, through labor and delivery to the postpartum period, we strive to provide the mother and baby with the best care possible. The health of the pregnancy will impact the health of a child throughout his or her life. The importance of maximizing the pregnant woman’s health and of detecting complications during pregnancy is the mainstays of prenatal care. We recognize that the majority of pregnancies are healthy and need our support and guidance followed by assistance during labor and delivery. However, we also know healthy, low risk women can develop complications unexpectedly, and experience teaches us to be vigilant.

Prenatal care requires monthly visits during the first two trimesters and more frequent visits during the last trimester. Patients will see each of the physicians during the pregnancy. An experienced, registered nurse, Dee Brubaker helps coordinate care, answers many questions on the telephone, and performs in office nonstress testing, a commonly used test to assess fetal wellbeing. Prenatal classes are offered in our office by three of our nurses along with fetal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes.

An ultrasound study is performed at each first visit to confirm the due date and to discover early problems with the pregnancy. In accordance with new guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology all women are offered nuchal translucency measurements, a more accurate screen for Down’s Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities than was previously available. In addition to the initial ultrasound, a more detailed study is performed during the middle of the second trimester to assess the fetal anatomy and placental location. Three dimensional scanning is also available if desired.
